About
A journalist for National Geographic would travel the globe writing stories. This website contained small markers indicating where the stories took place. Clicking the markers would take you to the authors personal entries. An interactive timeline was created to show the company's diverse history in an engaging way. The site used an "adventure" theme to reflect lifestyle of the world traveling author.
The site was mostly built in plain HTML; however the maps used Flash, so they can be zoomed in for closer examination of the routes and trails being followed. This was an especially fun project to work on, because being stuck in front of the computer all day, makes you wonder what else is out there in the world.

Project Challenges
The site was mostly built in plain HTML; however the maps used Flash, so they can be zoomed in for closer examination of the routes and trails being followed. This was an especially fun project to work on, because being stuck in front of the computer all day, makes you wonder what else is out there in the world.
Additional staff trained to maintain the website. Given the nature of all this interactive flash, and graphic content, people were hired to maintain the site on a permanent basis.
Due to the remote locations where the articles take place, a few authors would contribute from other locations around the world. Sometimes these submissions weren't digital or even spell checked. So the articles needed to be scanned in with OCR scanning software, and sent to Editors on behalf of the authors.

Navigational Map
The first concept of the site being proposed. It looks more map-like, but used image-maps which linked to the stories. This concept worked for a few weeks, but National Geographic expressed interest in sponsoring the site, and possibly making a TV show. They felt that a more interactive approach would be needed before they attached their name to the project. Always good to have corporate sponsorship to take your project to the next level.
